At the far north end of the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico lies Isla Holbox, a sleepy, largely untouristed island paradise that is known primarily for its tours to see large concentrations of whale sharks. Part of the Yum Balam Biosphere nature preserve, Isla Holbox is home to an amazing array of nature, including pelicans, manta rays and huge flocks of pink flamingos. Our tour from Playa del Carmen begins with a stop at Solferino, the oldest Mayan village in the northern Yucatan, where we will enjoy a light breakfast. We will visit the Yum Balam orquidean site where we will see holy Ceiba trees a thousand years old. At Chiquila, we will board boats and head for beautiful Yalahau lagoon, home to huge flocks of tropical birds including pink flamingos, and even wild dolphins! We will visit aptly named Morena Island (Bird Island), home to over 140 species of tropical birds, including ibis, flamingos, pelicans, spoonbills and more. At about noon, we will arrive at Isla Holbox's north beach. We will have lunch at a beachside hotel, where you can relax on the beach and use the facilities, or if you prefer you can take a golf cart to tour the island. Discover Isla Holbox Tour Highlights
